New Elementary School in Bécancour
The new elementary school in the Sainte-Angèle-de-Laval sector, delivered in 2024, provides nearly 315 students with a learning environment where engineered wood plays a central role.
The 3,760 m² building is organized around three distinct volumes: a welcoming entrance pavilion clad with vertical wood slats, a double gymnasium whose glulam beams are showcased by a high clerestory window band, and a bright learning wing.
At the heart of the project, a double-height atrium anchored by an architectural wood staircase captures the design approach perfectly: a hybrid structure combining glulam and CLT panels, with exposed wood where the architectural impact is greatest.
The engineered wood structure was fabricated by Ambiance Bois Structures, in close collaboration with the architects and structural engineers.
The glulam members and CLT panels, supplied by Nordic Structures, were engineered to meet structural requirements while maximizing their visual presence in shared spaces.
This project demonstrates the potential of engineered wood in institutional construction: high-performing, sustainable, and architecturally distinctive.
